Craig and Kara Abare wanted to make Scandinavian-inspired design more accessible

Craig and Kara Abare have backgrounds that span across design, photography, visual merchandising, events, and more—all of which slowly added up to them creating their own business. “We’ve worked independently and for a variety of companies such as Refinery29, W Magazine, Starbucks and Crate & Barrel,” says Craig. “Fun fact, we actually met working at Starbucks together when we lived in New York City.”

But Craig couldn’t shake the idea that it was time for the two to break out on their own and start something for themselves. “We had wanted to start our own shop for a while, but were quite nervous about starting something from the ground up,” he says. “Once we decided to take the leap though, things started to fall into place and it all felt rather natural.”

And so the couple opened their very own home decor shop, and named it miljuu, pronounced mil-you. “miljuu is derived from the danish word miljø, which means environment. We changed the spelling in order to stand out a little and we also loved how it looked visually when written out,” says Craig. “When we shared it with the Scandinavian brands we are working with, we got a lot of positive feedback about the spelling and the name overall.”

miljuu is focused on Scandinavian-inspired design pieces, with a collection that spans interior decor pieces like prints, candles, and trays, along with planters and vases for greenery, and textiles such as throws and cushions. Craig and Kara focus on form and function with the pieces in the miljuu collection. And, sourcing for miljuu takes them all over—or sometimes happens right from home. “We have traveled to Scandinavia and sourced in person and believe it or not, through social media!” says Craig. “There are so many great products that have awesome stories but do not necessarily have the advertising power of some of the bigger companies. Scouring through social media we have found some beautiful gems and are excited to bring them here to the US.”

A few of the couple’s favorite items? The nebl planters, for one. “They are so different from anything we have seen before,” says Craig. Another is the natural ash baskets. “They are well made and beautiful to look at. We loved connecting with the owner and learning about their incredible story while we were in Denmark.”

The couple has also created Seattle gift boxes featuring the beautiful home decor pieces from their shop. The boxes include a few of the couple’s go-to pieces, from the pinch clip (“We love the versatility of use,” says Craig) to the loop candle (“It brings a modern twist to such a classic silhouette.”)
